Halloween Houseplant Costumes: String Of Hearts

It's that time of year! We put together 6 tutorials for you this year, and we had some very specific criteria. Every costume had to be easy. Like super easy. Easy enough to accomplish in an hours or so with minimal supplies. Plus, every costume needed to cost $25 or less (assuming that you use mostly clothing from your closet!). So here you have them! Our best Halloween costumes for houseplant lovers! Enjoy!

String Of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii)

Supplies Needed:

Green Twine or String
Green Construction Paper
Safety Pins
Scissors (or a heart punch if you don't want to cut out a ton of hearts!)
Scotch Tape

Clothing Needed:

Neutral Shirt
Brown Skirt or Pants

Instructions:

Step One: Cut out about 225 1.5"-2" hearts out of green construction paper. We used two contrasting colors of green, but you could use a single color or as many as you want. If you wanted to get really fancy, you could even "variegate" your hearts with white  paint spatter ;) This is by far the most time consuming step, so if you want to make this even simpler, we recommend a heart paper punch. It will insure that all your hearts are even and save your fingers from scissor cramps!

Step Two: You'll be wearing one long string around your neck (see image) and safety pinning several strings to your skirt or pant waist band. Measure out approximately how long you want the strings to hang and how many strings you think you'll need assuming you pin them about 2" apart across the front of your waistband. Cut the strings to the appropriate length plus a few inches so you can play with the lengths a bit when you get them on. (Note: We initially braided green yarn for our strings, but much like cutting out the hearts, this is a pretty time-intensive way to go. So, in order to simplify it, we recommend using a green jute twine.)

Step Three: Using clear tape, tape each heart to the twine. We taped them about the same distance apart as the height of the heart. You can use the hearts themselves for spacing and it looked nice and uniform!

Step Four: Safety pin the end of each of the waist strings to your waistband, about 2" apart. Be sure the side without tape will be facing out.

Step Five: Wrap the single long string around the back of your neck and let the ends fall down your front.

And that's it! With the heart cutter, the whole process can be done in about an hour or less. We completed the costume with a simple neutral top and brown skirt. We recommend choosing a top in a color that the hearts will pop against, and you could always go with a bright skirt or pants as your "pot".

Happy Halloween!
