Cozy Cactus

Woman dressed as blooming cactus for halloween

Supplies:

White Pipe Cleaners
Headband
Artificial Flower (something big, pink or purple, and easy to glue to the headband)

Tools:

Hot Glue Gun
Wire cutters or strong scissors

Clothing:

Green Shirt, Sweater, or Sweatshirt (you'll be gluing to this so we recommend buying one specifically for the costume)
Pants of your choice (we went with jeans)

Instructions:

Step One: Cut the pipe cleaners into 3" lengths to create your cactus spines. Most pipe cleaners are 12", so you'll be cutting each cleaner into 4 pieces. You can make your cactus as prickly or minimal as you want, but we went with about 80 spines, using 20 pipe cleaners.

Step Two: Fold each spine in half at about a 45 degree angle.

Step Three: Using your hot glue gun, glue the spines at the bend onto your green top. This is a pretty permanent transformation, so don't use your favorite green sweater for this costume! We were able to find ours at a thrift shop for a few bucks. Be careful not to put any on the underside of the sweater arms or on the sides under the arms—you won't be able to put your arms down if you do ;)

Step Four: Use the hot glue to attach the flower to the head band. A little tip on this, be sure the headband fits you comfortably. There's nothing worse than wearing a headband that's too small while you're out trick or treating all night ;)

Tips: This is a pretty classic cactus costume, and it's simple and requires almost no skill. I've seen it as a kid costume but I honestly wouldn't recommend using this as a costume for anyone under 12. Those little pipe cleaners are pretty painful when they start poking you! Our other tip is to make sure you don't use this costume if you're going to be around your own young kids—cause there's no way you'll be able to pick them up with it on!
